Suspect Sought in Fatal Portland Shooting

PORTLAND, Maine - Portland police are seeking a suspect in the shooting death of a city man and the wounding of another late Tuesday. Police Chief Michael Sauschuck says he believes the suspect does not pose a threat to the general public.

"The individuals knew each other, in the sense that our suspect was there for a reason, and the unfortunate reason, in this particular case, was violence. So we do believe that he showed up at a specific apartment at a given time. But I won't speak to the relationship above and beyond that."

Sauschuck says security camera footage shows the suspect running from a building in the city's Deering Oaks park neighborhood. He was identified as a white male, approximately six feet tall, wearing black pants and a black hooded sweatshirt.

The victim was identified as David Andersen, 36. The second victim was treated at a local hospital and released, police said.

The apartment building is owned by a local social service organization called Shalom House. Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling says Shalom workers have been visiting the apartment building to offer counseling to neighbors who may have been traumatized by the shooting.
