Farmers' Almanac Predicts Another Nasty Winter for Northeast

By David Sharp, The Associated Press

LEWISTON, Maine — This is not what Bostonians want to hear: The Farmer's Almanac is warning of another rough winter.

A year after Boston was pummeled with the snowiest winter on record, editors of the Maine-based publication have dubbed the forecast a "winter deja vu." The almanac, which hits the newsstands this week, predicts cold and snowy weather from Maine to Montana.

The 199-year-old publication, not to be confused with the New Hampshire-based Old Farmer's Almanac, uses a secret formula based on sunspots, moon phases and tidal action for its long-range forecasts.

Modern scientists consider such methods to be tomfoolery.

But long-range forecasts are troublesome even for the Climate Prediction Center. It missed last winter's extreme cold in New England and the previous winter's "polar vortex."
