HANCOCK, Maine — Officials with the Frenchman Bay Conservancy have confirmed that an island off the coast of Maine has been donated to the land trust.
WCSH-TV reports longtime member Lisa Heyward gifted the 27-acre island between Sorrento and Hancock to the organization earlier this month.
Prior to its donation, Bean Island had been in the possession of Heyward’s family for generations.
The island joins a group of 54 properties totaling 6,600 acres that are already being conserved by the organization.
Executive Director Aaron Dority says Heyward wanted the public to have access to the island, which will now be preserved for future generations.
Outdoors enthusiasts are encouraged to boat or canoe to Bean Island during the summer to go hiking or camping as well as take in its views.
