PORTLAND, Maine - One of southern Maine's key hospitals is reviving plans to move from Portland's West End and consolidate at a newer campus elsewhere in the city.
The Portland Press Herald reports that Mercy Hospital could consolidate at its Fore River Parkway campus by 2018. Spokeswoman Susan Corliss says the costs of running two campuses in the same city are too high. A state environmental permit approved last year could allow the hospital to expand its building footprint up to 250,000 square feet with an additional ambulatory care facility of 72,000 square feet.
Corliss says the hospital has not decided the fate of the six-floor brick hospital complex on State Street. The Fore River campus went up in 2002.
The consolidation would coincide with the hospital's centennial if it happens in 2018.
