BANGOR, Maine (AP) _ The first woman has been selected to serve as president of the University of Maine.

University of Maine System Chancellor James Page announced Tuesday that he's chosen Susan Hunter to serve a two-year appointment beginning July 7. Trustees will meet June 25 for a formal vote.

Hunter has spent most of her career at the University of Maine.

Since September, she's served as the chancellor's vice chancellor for academic affairs for all seven UMaine system campuses. Before that she was executive vice president for academic affairs and provost for five years.

UMaine System Trustees Chairman Samuel Collins says she'll bring continuity to the so-called ``blue sky'' initiative aimed at focusing efforts on areas of distinction and launching new programs to better align with the state's needs.
