Bidders Tour Auctioned Maine Lighthouse

HARPSWELL, Maine (AP) _ Federal officials say about a dozen prospective bidders attended an inspection of the historic Halfway Rock Light Station, which is up for auction.

A spokesman for the federal General Services Administration says bidders toured the interior of the lighthouse and the island on which it sits. The lighthouse is in Casco Bay off of Harpswell and is only accessible by boat.

The lighthouse has attracted four bids so far, with a high offer of $58,000.

The 1871-built lighthouse is an active aid to navigation and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It sits on a two-acre rock ledge off Bailey Island and is named Halfway Rock because it is halfway between Cape Elizabeth and Cape Small.
