Governor Unveils New South Portland DHHS Building

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine - Maine Gov. Paul LePage this afternoon unveiled a controversial new building in South Portland that consolidates offices from the state's Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Labor.

The relocation of DHHS offices from downtown Portland to near the Portland Jetport has drawn criticism over the past year from advocates who say it's hard for some MaineCare recipients to get to the new offices.

But LePage said the move is worth it. "This is going to save the taxpayers $23 million," he said. "You heard the transportation is going to be here every day. For $23 million, taking the bus wouldn't hurt anybody."

Metro bus officials say new routes that start Sunday will cut ride times to the building from 40 minutes down to 20.
