SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine - Planning officials in South Portland have proposed changes to the city's zoning regulations to allow for more commercial and residential solar power installations.
The Portland Press Herald reports that the city's Planning Board voted last month to recommend changes that would permit larger commercial arrays and the installation of solar panels in residential zones.
The City Council will consider the recommendations on Monday.
Standards outlined in the proposal stipulate that the installation of solar energy systems and equipment must be conducted in a safe manner with minimal impact "on the quiet enjoyment of property.''
Currently, solar arrays aren't explicitly allowed in any zoning district in the city. If the changes are passed, South Portland would join numerous municipalities that have already taken similar measures in respect to solar energy.
