Maine Wildlife Officials Warn of Fishing License Scam

LEWISTON, Maine - The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is warning of a new scam that dupes people into paying for a fishing license without actually providing one.

Bonnie Holding of IF&W says the scam includes a third-party website that makes it look as though you can purchase a fishing or hunting license for any of the 50 states; but after paying the fee, people are simply given more information about how to apply.

"We just want people to be aware that when they get their licenses they should go through our Maine state system. So, maine.gov or mefishwildlife.com - those are our official websites to get your licenses."

Other versions of the scam offer the victim an email confirmation with no license ever showing up in the mail.

Holding says so far, she knows of no one in Maine who has fallen for the scams, but multiple cases are under investigation in other states.
