The Frank J. Wood Bridge in Brunswick.

The Topsham Select Board has authorized the town manager to sign an agreement with the Maine Department of Transportation for maintenance and upkeep of the Frank J. Wood Bridge, should it be replaced.

The bridge connecting Topsham to downtown Brunswick is nearly 100 years old and officials say it's not safe.

The DOT is in the final stages of preparing to go out to bid for the replacement of the bridge. The cost of a new bridge is not yet clear.

The agreement would clarify the town's role in upkeep of a park created on the Topsham side of the new bridge, as well as how electricity costs and plowing.

An earlier version of this story stated that Topsham signed an agreement to replace the Frank J. Wood Bridge — it has instead authorized the town manager to sign an agreement with the state Department of Transportation regarding upkeep.
