PORTLAND, Maine - Maine independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler has conceded the race, though there's no winner yet declared in the contest.

Addressing supporters at Ocean Gate in Portland, Cutler thanked them and campaign volunteers for sticking with him.  The latest poll leading into the election showed him far behind in the three-way race.

Cutler offered his congratulations to the winner of the contest.

"The voters have the final word, they've spoken and I accept their judgment," he said. "I offer my congratulations to whomever wins tonight, whether it's Mike Michaud or Paul LePage.  And I wish him well in taking on Maine's challenges over the next four years.  I hope he will be a governor for all Maine people."

Who that governor will be has yet to be determined. At this hour, only about a quarter of Maine precincts have reported results.

Polls have shown the race to be neck-and-neck between Democrat Mike Michaud and Republican incumbent Gov. Paul LePage for several weeks.
