Democrat Sworn in After Dispute over Maine Senate Seat

AUGUSTA, Maine - A Democrat who won a disputed Maine Senate seat after it was discovered that some ballots had been counted twice has been sworn into office.

Cathy Breen of Falmouth was sworn in by Republican Gov. Paul LePage on Thursday.

Breen had been viewed as the winner on election night, but a recount a few days later flipped the results in Republican Cathy Manchester's favor.

The Republican-led Senate voted to seat Manchester last month.

But a legislative panel's investigation into the results found that 21 ballots for Manchester had been double-counted during the recount and that Breen was actually the winner of the race.

Manchester announced after the mishap was discovered that she would resign.

Republicans will still control the Senate with 20 seats. Democrats now hold 15.
