WASHINGTON - Maine Sen. Susan Collins today criticized U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx for what she said was his agency's failure to provide a blueprint for reforming the Highway Trust Fund.
Collins, who chaired a hearing on the Transportation Department's budget, said the Highway Trust Fund, which provides billions to build and repair the nation's roads and bridges, will run out of money this year unless action is taken to raise more money for the fund.
"This administration has had six years to provide Congress with specific proposals to reform the trust fund," Collins said. She said no proposals have been forthcoming.
Collins also criticized the Obama administration for taking too long to propose new train safety regulations. Collins told Foxx that, with the number of rail accidents across the country, improved rail safety regulations are needed today.
Collins question Foxx "Could you update us and explain why more progress hasn't been made in this truly critical area. Well, first of all Madam Chairman, your concerns are our concerns. And we certainly take this issue very seriously."
