AUGUSTA, Maine - At State House news conferences, several groups urged lawmakers fund a tax break for Maine's natural resources based industries.
Dana Doran, executive director of the Professional Loggers Association, says legislation exempting fuel used in off-road equipment from the sales tax will help his struggling industry.
"It received unanimous support in the Senate, it has the governor's support, and it's a bill that would provide immediate relief to these industries right now," Doran said, "and we need it to move forward."
Several other groups also supported the tax break. But even though it has broad support, it carries a price tag of $8.8 million in the first year, and the supplemental budget bill before lawmakers leaves little money to fund anything but the budget itself.
