Maine GOP Made Delegate Tabulation Error at Convention

BANGOR, Maine - The Maine Republican Party say it made a mistake in counting the votes for national delegates and that state Rep. Ellie Espling of New Gloucester will be going to Cleveland instead of Joshua Dunlap of Scarborough.

Dunlap discovered the tabulation error following the 1st Congressional District caucus Saturday at the state convention in Bangor. But the delegate swap doesn't tip the scale of support for any particular candidate. Espling, like Dunlap, supports GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz.

At least 19 of 23 delegates Maine is sending to the national convention are Cruz supporters. There are two Trump supporters and two delegates are undecided.

The level of support could become a factor at a contested convention. Delegates are bound for the first vote. After that, they can vote for whomever they choose.
