Independent Candidates Uneasy About Taking Campaign Cash, Even From Indie Group

AUGUSTA, Maine - A national group is spending $3 million to support and elect independents, but not everyone wants their help. The group Unite America is endorsing and providing polling for independent gubernatorial and legislative candidates across the country, with a focus on states with an independent bent including Maine, Vermont and Alaska. The group says it's time state legislatures reflect record-high proportions of citizens identifying as independents. Some independents are conflicted about accepting so-called "dark money" - contributions from groups such as nonprofits that don't have to disclose their donors under federal law.In Maine, the group funded an intern for independent state Rep. Owen Casas. But others, like Rep. Kent Ackley, have rebuffed such "outside spending."
