The U.S. House of Representatives is meeting this weekend to act on a $25 billion measure that backers say is designed to assure the U.S. Postal Service can function at current levels.
U.S. Rep. Jared Golden of Maine’s 2nd District says work should also be done on another measure to address the pandemic.
Golden says that while the focus for the unusual Saturday session is on the Postal Service, constituents are telling him that Congress should craft another relief measure.
“It ought to be about restarting negotiations over additional aid related to the coronavirus pandemic, but it seems it is not leaning in that direction.”
Golden says it is important that the Postal Service has the resources to handle not just the expected increase in mail-in ballots this fall, but also the timely delivery of medications to seniors and veterans.
“For my constituents it’s the immediate need of getting their medications on time, for small businesses on Main Street or anyone that depends on delivery of their mail in a timely fashion.”
