The National Transportation Safety Board has posted to the web underwater video of the wreck of El Faro. The container ship sank during Hurricane Joaquin last October, killing all 33 crewmembers aboard. Four of them, including the skipper, were Mainers. Five members of the crew were graduates of Maine Maratime Academy.
The underwater video shows both the stern and bow of El Faro, which landed, upright, in 15,000 feet of water. The video also shows that the top two floors of the ships bridge were ripped off during the storm. Video of a bridge deck is also among the two-minutes of footage.
The safety board continues to investigate the El Faro sinking. An official told the CBS News program 60 Minutes TOTE Marine, which owned the ship, did not order it to sail, despite forecasts that indicated the ship would encounter some stormy weather on its voyage.
