BATH, Maine - Delays in the Zumwalt destroyer program at Bath Iron Works are hampering production of another major U.S. Navy ship-building program at the Midcoast yard.
That's according to the U.S. Naval Institute's news website. The article describes how holdups in the construction of the first two next-generation Zumwalt-class, DDG-1000, guided missile destroyers, are partially to blame for slowing work on two Arleigh Burke, DDG-51 destroyers also being built at BIW.
The delays - which could be down to a shortage of electricians - are reportedly holding up the DDG 51 schedule by five to seven months.
