Free Film Screening and Panel Discussion: WE WANT THE FUNK!
Join the University of Maine at Augusta's Libraries and Music Department for a free screening and panel discussion of the Independent Lens documentary film WE WANT THE FUNK!
WANT THE FUNK! is a syncopated voyage through the history of funk music, spanning from African, soul, and early jazz roots, to its rise into the public consciousness. Featuring James Brown's dynamism, the extraterrestrial funk of George Clinton's Parliament Funkadelic, transformed girl group Labelle, and Fela Kuti's Afrobeat, the story also traces funk's influences on both new wave and hip-hop.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion with UMA faculty Anita Jerosch, Associate Professor of Music, Lindsey Wiehl, Assistant Professor of Music, and Duane Edwards, Adjunct Professor of Music.
The film will be screened in-person in Augusta in our Fine Arts Building, Room 124 and online. Register in advance to watch the screening online: https://bit.ly/uma-funk
