MMPA Artist talks for The New Abstraction exhibition

MMPA Artist talks for The New Abstraction exhibition
Join MMPA for two wonderful evening events, June 27 + July 25, 2025. Artists from our current exhibition, The New Abstraction will speak about their work and influences. The Maine Museum of Photographic Arts (MMPA) announces the opening of "The New Abstraction," a provocative new exhibition that examines how contemporary photographers are redefining their medium in the age of artificial intelligence and digital transformation. Curated by MMPA Director Denise Froehlich, the exhibition features cutting-edge camera-less works and abstract photographic processes that challenge traditional notions of what photography can be. "Photography is the fastest transmuting medium because it's linked to science and technology," notes Froehlich, who encourages visitors to "touch anything you want, don't be shy" as they explore works that prioritize formal elements of light, design, time, and craftsmanship over documentary representation. The exhibition showcases artists like Luc Demers, whose innovative color processes exemplify the medium's evolution, alongside other contemporary practitioners who are "grappling with what is photography" in an era where AI tools and camera-less techniques are reshaping artistic possibilities. As photographers increasingly rebel against conventional norms and embrace the "unpredictable impact of abstract processes," "The New Abstraction" offers visitors a respite from daily concerns and an opportunity to engage with photography's fundamental essence—the capture and manipulation of light itself.
