Renowned New England photographer Steve Rosenthal will give an artist talk followed by a Q&A and reception at the Sarah Orne Jewett House Gallery on Friday, September 9 at 4pm. The talk and reception are free programs that accompany Rosenthal’s exhibition, "White on White: Churches of Rural New England," currently on display in the Sarah Orne Jewett House Gallery.

Rosenthal began his photography career while working as an architect in Cambridge Massachusetts in the late 1960s. He soon turned to architectural photography full time and quickly established himself at the top of the field in New England. Working primarily for the design professions, his images have been widely published in the U.S. and abroad. He is the recipient of prestigious national awards from both the photography and architectural professions.

"White on White" features Rosenthal’s luminous, large format, black and white photographs of New England churches. The images capture the effect of light on three-dimensional forms and the intrinsic beauty of the architecture while creating a world of rich order and rational light. He began photographing New England churches in the 1960s, and the project gradually became a 45-year personal quest. “These are the buildings which give New England towns and villages a unique sense of place. Collectively, they are as important to the cultural and architectural history of these villages as are the great cathedrals to the cities of Europe.”

The "White on White: Churches of Rural New England" exhibit consists of eighteen of Rosenthal's images and is on display at the Sarah Orne Jewett House Gallery until October 15.
