Writing in the Wild

Writing in the Wild

Join Ryan Brod, author, professor, and Registered Maine Guide, and Sarah Holman, writer and Registered Maine Guide, for an immersive outdoor workshop. We’ll spend the day in Bradbury State Park, exploring trails, forests, and views, allowing the setting to inspire our creative process. Participants will be given thought-provoking writing prompts centered around the natural world. We’ll explore the ways in which landscape impacts character, along with the parallels of writing narrative and moving through the landscape. We will delve into resonant memories and work to convey the deeper meaning of those moments on the page. Writers will begin the workshop with a blank page and leave with a work-in-progress. At the end of the day, we will share our work and offer each other constructive feedback.

Ryan Brod's essay collection Tributaries: Essays from Woods and Waters was the best-selling memoir of 2023 at Back Cove Books, in Portland. His work appears in River Teeth: A Journal of Nonfiction Narrative, Tahoma Literary Review, The Maine Review, The Learned Pig, and Gray's Sporting Journal, among many other places. He's a senior contributor for The Drake magazine and he's written copy for outdoor companies such as Duck Camp. A fly-fishing guide and educator, he teaches first-year writing and creative nonfiction at University of New England. He grew up in Smithfield, Maine and lives in the original Portland.

Sarah Holman is a Registered Maine Guide and the owner of She Hikes Mountains, LLC, a guide services business. Sarah shares trail reviews, images, and personal experiences from hiking and backpacking New England’s many peaks on her blog, shehikesmountains.com. She is also a professional writing coach, an adventure travel guide with Adventures in Good Company, and a young adult fiction writer. Sarah holds a BFA from Pratt Institute.
