13 Businesses Busted in Portland Liquor Sting

PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police have issued summonses to 13 city businesses that allegedly sold alcohol to minors.

Portland police worked with underage volunteers from Southern Maine Community College who attempted to buy alcohol 143 times at businesses from Sept. 3 through the 17.

Maine law states that store, restaurant or bar employees cannot provide alcohol to individuals under age 27 unless the employee verifies the customer is at least 21.

Those convicted of providing alcohol to minors face fines of $500 or higher for a first offense.

Police Cmdr. Gary Rogers tells the Portland Press Herald the summonses will be passed along to the Maine Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations, which will determine whether to assess a fine.

Repeated violations can result in a business losing its liquor license.
