New England Snowmobilers Hoping For Decent Season

CORNWALL, Vt. (AP) _ Snowmobilers across northern New England are hoping for a snowy season that stays cold enough to keep riders on the region's trails until spring.

In New Hampshire the season is set to open on Monday. In Vermont it's Tuesday. There's no fixed opening date in Maine, but it usually gets going by Christmas.

This week's heavy, wet snow in Vermont can provide a solid base, but trees are down across many trails. Mike Paquette of the Middlebury-based Foote of the Mountains Sno-Travelers says it could be next weekend before the trails are clear.

Bob Meyers of the Maine Snowmobile Association says gas prices are down and people are feeling good.

Chris Gamache, of the New Hampshire Bureau of Trails, says his state's trails need a few days to freeze.
