DA Considering Manslaughter Charge in Portland Fire

PORTLAND, Maine - The Cumberland County District Attorney says it will likely take at least a couple more weeks before her office decides whether to file charges in the deadly Noyes Street fire.

DA Stephanie Anderson says she is working carefully, seriously and deliberately, and it is going to take time.

At a news conference this afternoon, Anderson held up a thick notebook and several DVD's containing evidence in the case. She says her office will examine that evidence, and then determine whether the landlord of the apartment building is criminally culpable for the six deaths.

"The elephant in the room - and the first thing that comes to mind, obviously - is manslaughter," Anderson said.  "We have six people who died in this horrific fire, so obviously we're looking at whether a manslaughter charge will apply here."

The lead investigator in the case - Danny Young of the state Fire Marshal's Office - says he is still open to new information from the public about the case.
