Portland Landlord Completes Round One of Court-Ordered Work

PORTLAND, Maine - The owner of a Portland apartment building where six people died in a fire last year has completed a first round of court-ordered work needed to fix code and safety violations at another building he owns.

Portland spokeswoman Jessica Grondin says city inspectors went to the Dartmouth Street property this morning and found that Gregory Nisbet had completed all the items required by yesterday's deadline. She says there are a few items that must be completed by next Monday.

"There are a couple of remaining electrical issues that need to be completed that will take a little longer," Grondin says, "so that's why there was an extended deadline for that."

The city got a restraining order a month ago to keep tenants out of one-half of what's intended to be a two-family building. Grondin says Nisbet will have to get the city's approval before he can again rent the apartment. People have continued to live in the other half of the structure.

Among the work completed by Nisbet was installation of smoke detectors and a sprinkler over the boiler, and the removal of trash and debris.
