CASTINE, Maine - The Maine Maritime Academy's training ship, The State of Maine, found itself in a real-life situation on Wednesday when it received word from the U.S. Coast Guard that a boat was in distress about 29 nautical miles away.

The State of Maine was on its way to Portland after a training voyage to Europe when it changed course to help a sailboat that had been battered by storms and was taking on water about 500 miles off Nova Scotia.

The sailboat's captain - the vessel's sole occupant - was safely transferred to The State of Maine, along with some of his belongings.

MMA President William Brennan spoke with Tom Porter about the incident.
