Guard Aviation Center Opens in Bangor

BANGOR, Maine_ The new $14.5 million Aviation Readiness Center, completed at the end of the summer, was officially opened Saturday in Bangor, with a ribbon-cutting and an appearance by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, as well as Brig. Gen. Gerard Bolduc, commander of the Maine Air National Guard and the assistant adjutant general, air at the Joint Force Headquarters, Maine Air National Guard.

The newness of the building is unusual within the guard system as a whole. "Most buildings right now are from the late 1940s, early 1950s." explains Nathan Arnold, commander of the 126thaviation regiment.  He says the California-based team of architects was responsive in creating a modern design with smarter, more energy-efficient lighting and heating systems.
"This new center will enhance the professionalism the Maine Army National Guard is already known for." says U.S. Senator Susan Collins. "Just as important, it is an investment that confirms the high regard, respect, and gratitude  America has for the men and women who carry out difficult and dangerous missions on our behalf." Senator Collins told the gathered crowd that a constant principle of the guard is its readiness to respond, and that through projects like the upgraded aviation center,  the nation has an obligation to support that readiness.

About 180 soldiers will be based at the 53,000 square foot center.
