Firm Evicts Tenants from Dilapidated Apartments in Portland

PORTLAND, Maine — A New Jersey-based investment firm has decided to evict all tenants residing in a decrepit 24-unit apartment complex that the company owns in Portland.

The Portland Press Herald reports that the Maine representative of AEG Holdings said the Grant Street apartments are not only in subpar condition, but they also have gained a reputation for drug activity.

AEG managing director John Le says he's unsure if the complex will be renovated or demolished and rebuilt. Le says the company wants its property to become safer and more vibrant.

AEG, which purchased the apartments last spring, notified the tenants on Dec. 23 that they had to be out by March 1.

City council members have said they will investigate why people receiving housing subsidies were living in such conditions.
