AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ A national congressional primary day and five-day workweeks for Congress are among dozens of recommendations to reduce gridlock in Washington from a bipartisan group of leaders including former Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe.
Snowe, a co-chair of the Bipartisan Policy Center's Commission on Political Reform, helped unveil the group's report, ``Governing in a Polarized America: A Bipartisan Blueprint to Strengthen our Democracy,'' on Tuesday in Washington.
The group says a common primary date in June will boost voter turnout. It also says Congress should spend more time in Washington with three full workweeks followed by one-week recess.
Other recommendations include limiting the use of filibusters and encouraging all Americans between the ages of 18 and 28 to choose a year of service, like the military, public office or volunteer programs.
