BRIDGTON, Maine (AP) _ Independent gubernatorial candidate Eliot Cutler is hitting the road to highlight his proposal to slash property taxes for homeowners.
Cutler's ``property tax roadshow'' that begins Monday in Bridgton will take him to several communities this summer. He's challenging Republican Gov. Paul LePage, along with Democrat Mike Michaud.
Cutler's plan includes lowering property taxes for most homeowners by 20 to 40 percent through an increase in the homestead exemption. He is proposing to pay for it by adopting a seasonal sales tax increase from 5 to 7 percent, along with higher taxes on amusements, or through a permanent sales tax increase from 5 to 6 percent.
Cutler says property taxes disproportionally impact vulnerable Mainers, like seniors on fixed incomes.
Both of his political opponents say the plan is a bad idea.
