Abortion Raised as Issue in Maine Governor's Race

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Abortion rights supporters are raising the issue in the race for the Blaine House this November.

The Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund PAC, which threw support behind Democrat Mike Michaud on Monday, says Maine ``cannot afford another four years'' of Republican Gov. Paul LePage as governor.

LePage opposes abortion on a personal level but has never introduced legislation to limit the procedure. Nonetheless, the group says LePage's stance is ``extreme, dangerous and out of touch'' with most Maine voters.

Michaud has a mixed record on abortion issues throughout his six terms in Congress, but has said that he has evolved on the issue. He says as governor that he will ``unequivocally support and protect a women's right to make her own personal private medical decisions.''
