Maine's Treasurer-Elect Vows More Transparency

AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine Treasurer-elect Terry Hayes says Mainers will have an easier time finding out where their bond money goes after she takes office. Hayes says voters deserve to see what they are getting for their investment in bonds.

"I would like to make it easier not only only for policy makers, but for members of the public to have some pride of ownership when we purchase or invest in those assets," Hayes says. "And, as treasurer, I can make that happen."

Hayes says the information would also be valuable to lawmakers as they decide what borrowing proposal to put to the voters for their approval.

Hayes, a former Democratic legislator turned independent, was nominated for the treasurer's post by Republicans, and went on to defeat incumbent Democrat Neria Douglass.
