Maine Gov. LePage to Unveil Proposed 2-Year Budget

AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine lawmakers are eagerly awaiting details about Republican Gov. Paul LePage's two-year budget proposal.
The governor is expected to brief top lawmakers on his proposal on Friday.

After being sworn in to begin his second four-year term this week, LePage said that he's "going after the income tax,'' but has not yet provided any details on how he plans to reduce the tax.

He has said that his goal is to eventually eliminate it.

His efforts will likely face opposition from Democrats who fear that slashing the income tax will raise property taxes.

The battle over the state budget will be the number one issue for lawmakers this session and a spending plan must be in place by June 30 to prevent a government shutdown.
