Departing Maine House Speaker Gets Job at Nonprofit

PORTLAND, Maine - Departing Democratic House Speaker Mark Eves' next gig will be heading a Westbrook nonprofit serving people with special needs.

Eves will return in October to Woodfords Family Services, one of several organizations where he's worked during 15 years as a therapist. Eves, who's holding a statewide senior listening tour, cannot run again due to term limits.

The speaker is in a legal battle with Republican Gov. Paul LePage over the steps the governor took to oppose another job offer Eves received in 2015.

Eves is appealing a federal court ruling that said LePage was entitled to qualified immunity for his actions, which ended in a charter school nonprofit rescinding Eves' offer.

While Eves wants a court order barring LePage from violating "constitutional rights,'' LePage said he acted within his authority.
