Northern Maine Residents Seek Answers on State's Closure of ATV Trail

CROSS LAKE TWP, Maine - Representatives of the Maine Department of Transportation, the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry and the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will travel to northern Aroostook County Thursday to discuss why the state has closed an unofficial ATV trail that local residents used for years to access a larger state-approved ATV trail network.

State Rep. Danny Martin, a Sinclair Democrat, said the state posted closure signs along the unofficial trail near Cross Lake about a month ago but has thus far failed to explain why the closure was necessary.

"This evening's meeting is, in fact, a fact-finding meeting to determine whether or not folks can continue using it," he says. "It's my understanding that IF&W has closed the trail, or at least put up signs there, and we're not sure if it's because of folks in the area or at least one or two individuals have concerns about the use of the trail."

Martin said the 6 p.m. meeting will take place at the Cross Lake Senior Citizen Center.
