Navy Adm. Phil Davidson faced tough questioning from independent U.S. Sen. Angus King of Maine and other members of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday over two collisions involving Navy destroyers.
The two separate collisions that cost the lives of 17 sailors involved the destroyers Fitzgerald and John McCain, and according to a report by ProPublica could have been prevented with adequate training.
While questioning Davidson, King demanded detailed reports on training and maintenance.
As evidence of adequate training, Davidson pointed out that 280 other ships were operating safely at the same time as the two ships involved in incidents. King strongly dismissed the argument as unconvincing.
