High-Capacity Magazine Bill Likely Dead In Maine

AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine is unlikely to move forward on firearm legislation prohibiting the sale of high-capacity magazines. The Legislature's Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee voted Friday urging the Democratic-led Legislature to kill half a dozen such gun control bills.

Dozens of supporters and gun rights groups testified last week on such legislation.

The committee is set to consider five additional bills May 28. Those bills include background checks for private firearm sales, 72-hour waiting periods for gun buyers and criminalizing leaving unattended a loaded firearm that a child then inappropriately uses.

Committee Democratic House Chair Charlotte Warren says lawmakers need more time to go through such bills.
