King: Committee's Bipartisan Support For Defense Spending Measure Good News For Maine

The Senate Armed Services Committee has given bipartisan support for legislation that sets the blueprint for defense spending in the new budget year. And Sen. Angus King says that's good news for Maine.King says if the federal budget aligns with the recommendations in the Authorization Act, Maine will get a significant amount of defense spending.

The measure authorizes sub repairs at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, as well as spending to begin buying materials for two more Navy destroyers at Bath Iron Works. “Bath Iron Works works with a lot of contractors, smaller businesses throughout Maine for parts and a lot of their work," King says.

The Senate measure authorizes more than $740 billion in defense spending.  The House Armed Services Committee has yet to pass its version of the bill.
