Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, questions witnesses during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, May 7, 2020.

U.S. Sen. Angus King of Maine says President Donald Trump is endangering national security by blocking transition procedures for the incoming administration of President-elect Joe Biden.

King told CNN that the Trump administration should be providing national security briefings for Biden, federal office space and support and keeping career Department of Defense officials on the job during the transition.

“It’s clear that every day that this goes on is putting the country in more danger and to stand back and allow the decapitation of the Defense Department in the middle of the transition is just pretty shocking,” he said.

King said the firing of Defense Secretary Mark Esper and the resignations of top deputies the day after has put the country at risk, at a time when U.S. adversaries are looking to take advantage of vulnerabilities.
