PORTLAND, Maine - Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is planning to host a rally in Portland Wednesday.  According to the Sanders campaign, the Vermont senator will appear at the State Theatre, in the city's downtown.

In an interview Monday with MPBN's Fred Bever, Sanders said he is contesting Maine "very strongly," and plans to remain in the race "to the end. We think we have an excellent chance to win Maine and we look forward to seeing our friends there."

In July, Sanders drew about 7,000 people to a rally at Portland's Cross Insurance Arena.

Wednesday's event is free and open to the public on a first come, first served basis.  The rally is scheduled to start at 1 p.m., but doors will open at 11 a.m., campaign officials say.

According to his campaign, Sanders plans to address a "wide range of issues,  including getting big money out of politics, his plan to make public colleges and universities tuition-free, combating climate change and ensuring universal health care."

Sanders is battling Hillary Clinton for the party's nomination.  His visit comes ahead of Maine's Democratic caucuses, scheduled for Sunday.
