The leaders of the Maine Butterfly Survey and co-authors of a recent book on butterflies share their knowledge of Lepidoptera—which includes butterflies, moths and skippers. Butterflies are in dramatic decline across the country, and some of the species disappearing the fastest are in Maine. We learn why, and what can be done to help save these distinctive flying wonders.
Note: Bugs That Rule the World —a four-part PBS film about the diversity and role of insects and why they're in decline—premieres on Maine Public Television this evening (May 7 at 10 pm).
