"Island Women Speak" features a collection of spoken stories from local women spanning multiple generations, exposing moments from their personal lives. This year the women were challenged to tell a story about a three-word phrase: "A Hot Mess."

In fishing communities like Stonington, residents are already working to assess the damage done to homes, businesses and waterfront infrastructure, and beginning the long process of recovery.

Matthew Betts, superintendent of the Stonington Water Company, dumps chlorine into a tank of water on Sept. 19 that was just delivered from Silver Lake in Bucksport. The coastal town has trucked in more than 1 million gallons of water over the last summers after drought and seasonal demand cut into the supply.

Because of drought conditions and seasonal demand, Stonington has been forced to look elsewhere for water over the last two summers: it has bought more than a million gallons — about 400,000 last year, and double that this year.
