The University of New England says that three undergraduate students have tested positive for COVID-19, and another 22 are in quarantine.

The school announced on Monday that it’s reviewing the conduct of 17 students who apparently failed to wear masks and physically distance at a gathering near the Biddeford campus last Wednesday evening.

There are still no reported cases of the new coronavirus in Maine, but both the University of Maine system and Bowdoin College announced Wednesday that students will no longer be allowed on campuses after spring break in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Both plan to continue classes online for the rest of the semester. Other campuses in the state are watching the situation closely, but are staying open for the time being.

The University of New England has announced that it will freeze employee salaries in the coming school year. School officials say the freeze is intended to keep tuition from rising more than the planned increase of 3 percent.

The University of New England has launched a new institute dedicated to study of the North Atlantic and the Arctic.

Officials announced Monday that the Institute for North Atlantic Studies of the University of New England will be based in Portland. The Portland Press Herald reports the first students for UNE North will be accepted this summer and classes will begin in summer 2019.

The University of New England has announced its new president:  Dr. James Herbert, executive vice provost at Drexel University in Philadelphia, will replace outgoing President Danielle Ripich this July. 

Under the tenure of Ripich, UNE opened colleges of pharmacy and dental medicine.  Herbert says he plans to continue to strengthen the university's health sciences programs.

BIDDEFORD, Maine - The gift of a small island in Saco Bay will allow University of New England Marine Sciences students to be involved in all 21st century ocean, coastal, marine and environmental issues.

That's UNE's plan, now that the school has been given Ram Island by real estate developer Art Girard. UNE describes Ram Island as one acre of pristine land which is located two miles offshore.

PORTLAND, Maine - The University of New England and Bangor Savings Bank are working together on a program designed to help college students and recent graduates get ready for the real working world.

In a pilot program announced today, four recent graduates from Maine colleges, who work at the bank, will take part in a program combining online and in-class coursework and on-the-job training.

Bob Montgomery-Rice is president and CEO of Bangor Savings Bank. He says one goal is to teach young people skills they don't typically learn in college.

UNE Tops Maine Schools for Graduates' Earnings

WASHINGTON - The University of New England does more to increase the career earnings of its graduates than any other two- or four-year university or college in Maine, according to a new report by the Washington D.C.-based Brookings Institution.

In their study, "Beyond College Rankings," researchers at Brookings used a "value-added" approach to measure more than 7,000 schools, and how they had affected their graduates' mid-career earnings, student loan repayment rates and occupational earnings.

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine - Southern Maine Community College and the University of New England have created a partnership that allows students to transfer their credits.

Leaders from both institutions announced Monday that they'd signed 16 transfer agreements ensuring students can transfer seamlessly from Southern Maine Community College programs to programs at the University of New England.

SACO, Maine - Graduates from Thornton Academy in Saco will soon be able to earn a college degree in three years. Thornton and the University of New England today announced a partnership where students who excel in certain coursework can enter UNE as a sophomore. The goal is to increase access and affordability for those seeking a college degree. It's an option that's becoming increasingly common in higher education.
