AUGUSTA, Maine - The future of wind energy in Maine is up in the air, as lawmakers consider a comprehensive bill that would ease the state's original goals for wind energy generation.

AUGUSTA, Maine - Wind power advocates squared off against opponents today as lawmakers heard testimony on two competing bills that could affect wind development projects in Maine's unorganized territory.

Maine's unorganized territory, or UT, refers to that vast wilderness which has no local government. It encompasses more than 400 townships, 9,000 year-round residents and more than half the acreage of the entire state of Maine.

PORTLAND, Maine - This is shaping up to be a big year for wind power. That's according to Muskie school economist Charlie Colgan, who unveiled a new study today at a Portland news conference.

"We're right at what I would call a takeoff point for the industry," Colgan told reporters.

A Maine wildlife science research center is receiving $1.1 million dollars from the U.S. Department of Energy to help answer some of the unknowns about wind power development.

FRANKFORT, Maine - Residents of a Maine town are set to discuss a proposal for a six-turbine wind energy project.

New Hampshire-based Eolian Renewable Energy is hosting the event on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Frankfort. The firm says the project would generate enough electricity for 6,500 homes and would be built with private money on private land. It would make an Eolian subsidiary the town's largest taxpayer.

DIXFIELD, Maine (AP) _ Residents of a Maine town are calling for a six-month moratorium on wind energy projects.

Quincy, Massachusetts, firm Patriot Renewables LLC asked Dixfield, Maine officials three years ago about building 13 wind turbines on a mountain ridge. The town's selectmen approved a Wind Energy Facility Ordinance in 2012 and began revising it in January 2013.

There's enough wind power potential right now off the Atlantic coast to power five million homes, according to a report released today by coalition of environmental, conservation and alternative energy groups.
