Diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to everything we do at Spindleworks Art Center. Yet, these values are increasingly under threat at a national level, despite the legal protections that uphold the rights of disabled individuals. DEI is not a discriminatory ideology—it is a legal and moral imperative. However, we now face the troubling reality that simply stating this truth could put our own funding at risk, as efforts to defund programs deemed “discriminatory” are being used to undermine the very protections we stand for. We remain committed to ensuring that disabled artists can create, speak, and share their truths without censorship. The arts must remain a space for unfiltered expression, and we will continue to advocate for that freedom.
Spindleworks Art Center is a program of the Independence Association of Brunswick Maine whose mission is to assist individuals with intellectual disabilities in obtaining full and inclusive lives in their chosen community.
