The workshop will focus on interesting aspects of our regional forests including:
Some tree identification along with unique adaptations of our local species. How to interpret a forest's history, for example, if a now-forested area was once agricultural land, was it a pasture, a hayfield or a crop field? Coevolved interrelationships between trees and other species, such as soil fungi, and how these interactions create resilient, stable ecosystems.
Tom Wessels is professor emeritus at Antioch University where he founded the master's degree program in Conservation Biology. As a terrestrial ecologist, he is best known for his work in forest ecosystems, but also has a strong interest in desert, arctic, and alpine ecosystems. Tom has conducted workshops on ecology and sustainability throughout the country for over three decades. He is author of numerous books, with his latest being New England's Roadside
Ecology: Explore 30 of the Region's Unique Natural Areas.
