Police: Teen Set Fire to Scare Ex-Girlfriend

ALFRED, Maine - Police say a teenager indicated on arson and murder charges in connection with a September fire that killed two people in Biddeford told them the men were unintended "collateral damage'' and he lit the fire to scare an ex-girlfriend.

Eighteen-year-old Dylan Collins told police before his arrest in November that a 16-year-old girl who lived in the apartment building had broken up with him two months before the Sept. 18 fire was set. Firefighters rescued the girl and her parents.

The Portland Press Herald reports the details became available in affidavit unsealed by a judge Friday at Collins' arraignment.

Twenty-three-year-old Michael Moore died of smoke inhalation in the fire and Moore's friend, 21-year-old James Ford, died a month later from complications of smoke inhalation.
