Legendary Maine college baseball coach John Winkin has died.
Winkin, a New Jersey native, started his sports career as a journalist in 1946, and then as a broadcaster for the New York Yankees. He went on to coach baseball at Colby College, the University of Maine, and Husson University from the mid 1950's all the way to the mid 2000's, leading U-Maine to several College World Series. Winkin, who was still coaching ball at Husson in 2006, became known as the oldest active head coach in any college sport.
Winkin retired following a stroke in 2007.
Before his long career in sports, Winkin served in the Navy during WWII and witnessed the attacks on Pearl Harbor.
John Winkin died Saturday in Waterville, just a few days shy of his 95th birthday.
